small pieces of joy

pieces of joy in each day

let it snow; repeat

on December 8, 2010

ST1: 6 inch ribbon curls. I watched Elf yesterday and decided to try my hand at 6 inch ribbon curls. I’d say I was pretty successful. I forgot how much fun wrapping presents can be, if you’re not in a time crunch! It also made me very excited to give the gifts!

ST2: Santa Claus on Glee. If you didn’t see yesterday’s episode, one of the characters still believes in Santa. It was such a great episode, watching the other characters try to keep her childlike faith alive for at least one more Christmas was pretty inspiring. I was thinking about this, and believing in Santa as a child is how we should believe in Jesus now. It’s the child-like faith that children have in Santa that we should have. We believed that with Santa, anything could happen. And when he didn’t bring exactly what we wanted, we still believed. It is definitely hard to believe in something we can’t see. I struggle with it all the time. I’d like to try for the rest of the Advent season to have a Child-like faith in Jesus, like I did with Santa. Maybe I’ll be anxious for Jesus’ birth like I was for Christmas Day when I knew Santa had come!

ST3: “Where are you Christmas?” This song reminds me of a time when I was in the car with my brother and this song came on. We tend to belt this song as loud as possible, and make sure to emphasize the phrase, “my world is Chee-anging” because we’re not sure what ‘cheeanging’ is. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, listen to the song and you’ll know.

I actually listened to the lyrics this time, and the same line I always laugh about was the one that hit me the most. “My world is changing, I’m rearranging, does that mean Christmas changes too?” This year my husband and I will not have a Christmas tree. We don’t have the space or the money to have one. We also won’t have stockings because we don’t have a fireplace, or any good wall space to hang them. I will spend most of Christmas season away from my family, more so than when I was in college. But all of these details don’t really matter, because really, I get to have Christmas no matter what else is going on in my life. It will still come, Jesus is still born, and that will always be the same. These thoughts make me very comfortable with not having the same things as I usually do for Christmas. Thank you, Faith Hill, for helping me realize this.

ST4: icy icicles, again. I just can’t get over it. Compare the two pictures below. It’s incredible. And I also have included a video of the snow. Even though it is frigid outside, I am happy to look at the beautiful snowflakes falling.

Icicles from Monday

Icicles from Wednesday

ST5: Hot cocoa and Christmas movies! Here are the movies I’ve watched so far:
A Christmas Story
Elf
All I Want for Christmas
The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause 2

What should be next on my list??

Have a great day. Remember, today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. We get to celebrate Mary being born without sin, so she could perfectly mother Jesus. Pretty sweet. It’s a day of obligation, Catholics, so try to make it to mass tonight! Mucho Love from me. Peace.

Hi, Kari! I enjoy reading your blog; keep up the great writing. One of my all-time favorite Christmas movies is Prancer. Not many people have heard of it, but it’s wonderful. Happy Advent! Annie Smilie

So, that Faith Hill song is great for making fun of it, but I guess you are right, it is a good message.

the gLee episode was SOOO GREAT! I’m glad it finally started getting good again.
We have only had two days when it snowed and those were in December. Crazy how weather is different everywhere.

I concur with Annie, Prancer is a great movie. Most of the Christmas movies that I still cling to are the oldies, but goodies. I couldn’t have Christmas without It’s a Wonderful Life, Holiday Inn, and its remake White Christmas (both have Bing Crosby,) Miracle on 34th STreet (with Natalie Wood as the little girl,) The Bishop’s Wife, Christmas in Connecticut, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase.

P.S. We have a little boy who was diagnosed with a brain tumor last April and he has been through all the treatment at St. Jude’s. We have decided to sing Christmas Carols at his house next Tuesday and the only thing he wants for Christmas is snow and we haven’t had any, sooooooo…. we’re (the Brookridge staff) purchasing a snow making machine for $400 to make a little pile of it blowing and something that he can see and roll out in his wheelchair (he has lost all balance now.) They don’t know how much longer he has. This is a wonderful community and I’m so happy to be a part of it. Anyway, let me know if you are able to enjoy any of these Christmas movies.

Thank you for all of the wonderful movie suggestions!

I have been reading his blog and wow, what a strong family. I think that is extraordinary that your staff is doing that for him. That will be so incredible. I will keep praying for snow for him!!!

I don’t have any Christmas movie suggestions, but I did just watch the Song of Bernadette (the old one) and it was great!

    Miss you, pretty girl! 🙂

I LOVED that episode of Glee also. It was beautiful. Brittney is one of my new favorite characters. And you hit the translation right on the head.

Next on your movie list: Muppet Christmas Carol. 🙂
