small pieces of joy

pieces of joy in each day

angels among us

on February 12, 2011

The small thing from the past few days happened while I was substituting for the religion teacher on Wednesday. As the 8th grade class came in one student rushed to me and said it was one of their classmates’ birthday. Without taking a breath he asked if they could do the birthday blessing for him. Having not heard of this before (as my only experience teaching is in public schools) I gave him a questioning look and he just said, “We want to bless him on his birthday! We do this on everyone’s birthday. We can’t miss it.”

Thinking a blessing really can’t be a bad thing I tell the class that we will do the blessing and they all moved to the back of the room by the statue of Mary holding Jesus and made sure the special peer was sitting in the center of all of them. The leader began the prayer (he knew exactly which book and page to go to) and all the students got very quiet. He read through a beautiful prayer and then asked all to extend a hand and pray silently for the birthday boy. Those few moments of silence were so powerful. This group of eighth graders were not only perfectly silent, but they were all sending prayers on behalf of this one student. They may not talk to him or get along with him, but for those few moments, they did.

Of course right after we finished they were back to their loud, obnoxious selves. But I believe those few seconds were longer than we all think.

Who is someone you would like to give a blessing to right now? Maybe it’s their birthday, or someone who is going through a tough time. If you’d like to mention them in a comment, I’ll ask for the blessing too!
