small pieces of joy

pieces of joy in each day

long overdue

on February 25, 2012

Hello faithful readers!

I apologize for being MIA in the past few weeks/months. My only excuse is that I haven’t been making my blog a priority. I’m hoping for that to change soon.

I think the biggest thing is that the longer you don’t do something, the harder it is to get back to doing it. Can you relate to that? So here I am, doing the thing I’ve not been doing for a while.

I’m going to make this post a list of things I’ve enjoyed in the past week or so. That way we can get caught up, and I can hopefully get back to a more regular posting schedule.

1. My best friend from Kansas came to visit last weekend. She spent a half day at my school with my kiddos and helped me to grade all their quizzes. We enjoyed many lazy hours on the couch watching movies and chatting. Lady luck struck as we spent Saturday night at a casino and I won $100 on a penny slot! That is a night I won’t soon forget, especially since we feasted at an all you can eat gourmet buffet. I even introduced Laura to Super Mario Brothers Wii and we spent lots of time in the icy world, mostly because I love seeing Mario and Luigi in penguin suits.

2. Lent has begun and this is my first experience at a Catholic school. The coolest part is that I get to talk about Lent with my students AND we participate in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving together. On Thursday we spent class time (with my home room) discussing what we wanted to do as a class. For prayer they decided they wanted to write a class prayer that we would say together each morning. For fasting we decided to walk to lunch in silence as a time of prayer/reflection. This is a HUGE sacrifice for these kids, not to talk before lunch! And for almsgiving the kids will be collecting change from their house and their allowances to give to our sister parish school in Bangladesh. I am so impressed with the students’ willingness to not only pray with each other, but to help each other with the fasting as well. It’s so cute to hear them ask for me to put the prayer up on the board, and to see them turn and put a finger over their lips to indicate silence going to lunch. I can see character building already, and Lent has only just begun!

3. We are experiencing what I think is our last snow of the winter. We have about 3 inches on the ground and it truly is beautiful. Today is the first time this winter I have seen icicles! Last winter I think they came in December and didn’t leave until March.

4. Tonight is Better Than Risk Night. Jonathan has his monthly Risk game with his buddies, so me and Victoria get to hang out and do girly things while the boys conquer the world, or space, depending on which version they decide to play. I do enjoy these nights, mostly because when you live with a boy, it is hard to get the girl time you need!

5. Last night I was able to skype in to Laura’s 30th birthday party. It was so nice to see familiar faces and to be a part of her party. I sure do miss everyone in KC, but seeing their faces did warm my heart.

6. Lent is here and it has been good so far. I love this season because it allows for me to refocus my life. I gave up Facebook again this year, which might not seem like a huge sacrifice, but the time I normally spend on facebook will now hopefully be more productive. Facebook sometimes can be more draining than uplifting anyway!

So there you have it…a quick update. I’m hoping to get back to more of a routine, but we all know how routines can go!

I hope this finds all of you doing well.

What are you doing this weekend?

Yes! Missed you bloggin’. I loved reading about your students! Hey, I heard in Ash Wednesday Mass last week that God wants us to use whatever we gave up for…… more prayer and intimacy with Him. That was eye-opening for me because I always “replaced” my sacrifice with something else of choice (for example, if you give up chicken, you replace it with beef instead?) I’m 28, and I finally made the connection that God just wants us to be closer to him, our top priority! 🙂 Love ya
