small pieces of joy

pieces of joy in each day

Woah, Wed-nes-day came up so fast! It’s been a good few days so I’m excited to roll out the ST list.

ST1: the alto part. So I’m singing with my church choir for a Madrigal Dinner in December. Basically we get dressed up in Renaissance attire and sing fun acapella songs along with a play about a King’s dinner. I am the only alto besides the choir director so it has been a blast learning the part and singing my heart out. We get to do fun old school carols and stuff. My favorite is “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” because the alto part is stinkin’ awesome. Can you tell I’m enjoying this?

ST2: turning on the car and a great song is on the radio. Lately I’ve been listening to the local country station. Yes, all you people who have known me for a long time, go ahead and gasp. I like country music, and a great song was on right when I turned on the car. It made me smile and of course sing along.

ST3: Mrs. Camden in Star Trek. Do you remember the TV show 7th Heaven? Well the mom, Mrs. Camden, was in the movie Star Trek: The Voyage Home and I about flipped. It made me really want to go back and watch the TV show and see Lucy, Mary, Simon, the big brother and the cute little girl…and all the ‘trouble’ they managed to find.

ST4: sweet potato fries fail. In my attempt to make my own sweet potato fries I managed to use all the mandolin slicer pieces, mutilate a potato and burn about half of them. The half that wasn’t burned tasted awesome, the others just looked sad and in pain. I tried again the next day and had a little better luck, but in the end I just laugh at myself because it probably looked hilarious to see me trying to prepare them. After many baking successes, I should have known the fail was coming.

ST5: friend phone dates. It had been a while since I’d talked to friends on the phone, so yesterday was such a treat. I got to have great conversations with two close friends and it was very rejuvenating. I forgot how much I really love talking to my friends from KC and I hope I’ll do better in keeping in touch. Here is a cool story about friendship, found in today’s In Conversation With God: “The story is told that when Alexander the Great was on his deathbed his relatives were persistently asking him, “Alexander, where are your treasures?” He responded, “My treasures? They are in the pockets of my friends.” When we die, our friends should be able to say that we shared with them everything we possessed.”Interesting thought, isn’t it?

ST6: catch-up emails. I got a few emails from former co-workers from my school in KC. It was so nice to hear from them and remember the good things about my old school. It really made me miss them and a lot of the people, including the students. I ended up looking through the yearbooks of my 4 years there remembering all the growing I did in those few years. I’m so glad I was there for that time because the people and situations I encountered made me the teacher I am now, and I’m definitely capable of being a good substitute and tutor because of it. I just keep having to remind myself of that…

ST7: calls for sub jobs. I get to work tomorrow AND Friday. I was telling my MIL that this will be the most I’ve worked consecutively since May. That is SO CRAZY to think about. Really, two days in a row? I’m excited because tomorrow will be 6th grade, which is my home away from home. I don’t know what subject I’ll be teaching, but I’m really happy to see that age group again. Its great to get these calls in advance so I don’t have to wake up not knowing what I’ll be doing. Wish me luck!

ST8: someone asked me “How can I pray for you today?” How cool is that?

Thats about it for now. I’m going to go do some reading and piano playing before husband comes home later this afternoon. Again, thanks for your comments, I love them!

“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth.” ~Sirach 6:14-15

Here’s a fun 7th Heaven fun fact for you: The actress who played Mrs. Camden went to Saint Mary’s. We’re pretty proud. πŸ™‚

I have so many things to follow-up on here!

ST1: We did Madrigals in high school at Christmas time. They were AWESOME….especially the alto part. I probably still have my dress lying around somewhere if you need one!

ST3: Not only is Mrs. Camden a St. Mary’s alum, she is a super-Catholic woman! That makes me love her more. πŸ™‚

ST4: Keep up with the sweet potato fries. We’ve been trying to make these for a while and I still haven’t figured out how to bake them just right. πŸ™‚
